Colena May McDougal, the artist behind Colena May Designs, is an up-and-coming jewelry artist who makes her home right here in Juneau, Alaska. Her offerings include a variety of handmade necklaces, bracelets, pendants and earrings.
Born and raised in Salem, Oregon with her twin sister, Colena May McDougal has been creating her whole life. A maker of candles, dolls, multi-fiber baskets, and other folk art, Colena has been hand crafting jewelry for 14 years. She has participated in both the Juneau Public Market and Autumn Festival in past years and has also donated her work to numerous charitable events.
Colena practiced midwifery for 5 years before trading in her scrubs for her current Rainbow Foods apron. She has lived in Juneau for 11 years with her husband Drew, and continues to look for new artistic challenges.
Colena's
latest jewelry incorporates semi-precious stones, pearls, wood, leather, and sterling silver. Circles, clasps and ear wires are hand forged from sterling silver. Colena says, "I like to make a statement with big, bold, and colorful beads. I love turquoise."
